Which make of Datalogger?
There are many different systems available today, most schools already have some data logging equipment but in some cases this may be old and outdated. On this website we will consider the two most popular systems used by physics teachers today (according to the survey at the Lyon Workshop 2007) Pasco and Vernier.Both Pasco and Vernier produce very high standard equipment at a reasonable price (not cheap but good value for money). Both companies have their roots deeply in Physics and have a very good record for supplying innovative equipment for Physics Education.
How many Dataloggers?
The ideal situation for the effective integration of ICT is that you have a class set of datalogging equipment (at least one between two). This is of course a big investment but could be shared between all Group 4 subjects. The alternative is to have one station on a circus of experiments, however if the students are to become competent users of the equipment they will need to get their hands on it more than just once every 4 weeks. Having all the students using dataloggers at the same time also has the advantage that you can give demos to the whole class and they can help each other to find short cuts and neat tricks. When doing practicals involving Design students will often come up with ideas that incorporate the use of sensors (if they know they exist), in these scenarios it is useful to have enough equipment for all the students.Introducing the students
Students are often very good at finding their way around new pieces of software and given time would probably work out what to do for themselves, however it is probably more efficient to start the practical course by introducing the students with a simple step by step guide from plugging in to analysing data.
